(13th Congress) - “Vietnam” is a keyword mentioned many times in the past week as Vietnam has participated in and hosted many important events at the same time.

They included State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s chairmanship of the high-level open debate at the United Nations Security Council; the State President’s speaking at the virtual Leaders Summit on Climate, together with over 40 international leaders; and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the special ASEAN Leaders Meeting. In each of these important events, Vietnam played a proactive role, proposing new initiatives with the international community to cope with emerging challenges.
Vietnamese messages
State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s chairmanship of the high-level open debate on "Cooperation between the UN and regional organisations in enhancing confidence-building and dialogue in conflict prevention and resolution" of the United Nations Security Council for the first time has become a particularly important highlight event, as Vietnam takes on the position of President of the UN Security Council for the second time.
The message delivered to the international community is that only dialogue and cooperation can help the world eliminate conflicts and war, and create peace. Congratulations and comments that highly appreciate the executive role of the President of Vietnam from global leaders and delegates showed the trust and confidence in Vietnam, an important member of the UN.
Along with the success of the high-level open debate at the UN, the message “Vietnam is determined to transition to a green economy with zero emissions and 9% reduction of total greenhouse gas emissions with domestic resources” that President Nguyen Xuan Phuc delivered at the Leaders Summit on Climate organized by the UN, has also received much praise from international friends.
Another important highlight that clearly showed Vietnam's imprint of the week was the success of the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting. During this meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked ASEAN, the UN, Vietnam and other partners to support ASEAN's efforts in approaching and finding suitable solutions for Myanmar.
As the President of ASEAN 2020 and currently the only ASEAN representative at the United Nations Security Council, and also the Chairman of the United Nations Security Council in April 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered many important messages, focusing on promoting the implementation of cooperation orientations that ASEAN agreed on in 2020, meeting the urgent requirements of ASEAN in the current period, especially good disease control, ensuring people's lives and maintaining peace, security and stability in the region, including in maritime zones, for economic recovery and development.
Sharing the opinions of ASEAN leaders on the Myanmar situation and the role of ASEAN, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that in its position as a non-permanent member and currently the President of the United Nations Security Council in April 2021, Vietnam made efforts to facilitate finding the right solution for the Myanmar situation; thereby, requesting ASEAN countries to work closely with Vietnam in the UN forums to mobilize partners to support ASEAN's efforts in approaching and finding suitable solutions for Myanmar.
A dynamic Vietnam on international forums
In the context of complicated developments in the region and world, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the important events attended by Vietnam's senior leaders showed Vietnam’s new, positive and powerful role in working with the international community to address global challenges.
This is the reason the senior leaders of Governments congratulated Vietnam and expressed their wishes to, through Vietnam, cooperate more closely with ASEAN.
The ASEAN leaders' appreciation of Vietnam's role and initiative to work hand in hand with other members in solving challenges is another example. During the meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 24, ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi expressed his wish that Vietnam would support and contribute more to ASEAN towards the goal of enhancing the capacity of the ASEAN Secretariat, encouraging the active participation of Vietnam in the internship program at the ASEAN Secretariat.
The regional press also praised the messages that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent to the ASEAN Leaders Meeting in Indonesia. Indonesian television channel "BeritaSatu" quoted "President Jokowi called Vietnam a friend of Indonesia".
From another perspective, the three highlight activities of the week of Vietnam playing an important role in global multilateral forums are an opportunity for Vietnam to send messages at the highest levels of our Party and State to the international community on the country's development orientations, visions and aspirations set by the 13th National Party Congress; strongly affirming the foreign policy of peace, independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, proactive and active integration into the world in a comprehensive, extensive and effective manner.
Vietnam's hosting of the United Nations Security Council's high-level open debate, its being invited to participate in the Global Climate Summit organized by US President Joe Biden, and its sending out of important messages at the special ASEAN Leaders Meeting, once again demonstrates Vietnam's prestige and position in promoting the role and contributing responsibly to peace and security issues under the common concern of the region and the world./.
