The event was attended by Secretary of the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Provincial Party Committee Pham Viet Thanh, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Cong, and representatives of ministries and branches. 

The 214,121-DWT vessel, operated by the 2M Alliance led by Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company, is designed to carry over 18,300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), is 400 meters in length and 59 meters in width.

The docking of Margrethe Maersk makes the CMIT one of 20 terminals globally capable of receiving such a large ship, contributing to affirming the position of the CMIT system on the world maritime map.

The terminal’s capacity to receive ships of over 214,000 DWT was said to be significant, as Vietnam has signed several free trade deals such as the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Vietnam’s import and export goods can be directly loaded onto large-sized vessels and shipped to many large markets like Europe and the US without having to transit ports in Singapore or Malaysia; helping to save logistics costs and reduce transport time, so goods can more quickly enter the market.

Therefore, this is a major development step of the maritime industry to prepare resources for the growth potential of Vietnam’s foreign trade./.
